Celebrating Your Birthday During Covid

Many of us will have experienced a birthday during lockdown, and as the Covid train rumbles on there's a good chance may will experienced a second lockdown birthday too. So what can we do to make that special day well....special?

The term lockdown birthday is something that many of us will have grown accustomed to since March 2020. Some of us may have already experienced it, whereas others may have their birthdays coming up in the next few weeks. But even with restrictions a birthday is still something to be marked and celebrated. But, it seems we are very limited to what we can do. With that in mind, here are some ideas of how you can spend that special day just for you and also what we have to look forward to when social distancing, mask swearing and lockdowns are not normal.

Lockdown birthday inspiration

Sometimes we need a little inspiration that can help us to decide on how to celebrate a birthday at home with no obvious choices like a restaurant or place to go. Often it could be these birthdays that end up being some of the best that you have had. Here is a little inspiration to help you get started with that.

Shopping online and treating ourselves

One of the first things you could do is a shopping trip on your laptop and tablet. Many people still get things like vouchers or money for birthdays so why not relax in your favourite loungewear, get a nice drink and feel content that you can avoid the crowds and the cold weather. It might be you are looking for specific brands like Off-White for men or maybe you just want to browse your favourite shops and see what is out there. It can be a great way to help you feel that excitement of treating yourself without leaving your home. Many people have turned to online shopping during the pandemic and find that it is so convenient and easy to do. Plus it gives you the chance to make considered purchases and try some new brands or support small independents.

Cooking a meal for your household or a special date night in

No heading to a fancy restaurant this time but that doesn't mean you can't dine on gourmet food. Perhaps your birthday means cooking up a special meal from scratch. Ordering the ingredients in, making something nice, and even looking at having someone cook for you. You may make something for your whole household or if you are living as a couple or are parents, perhaps a special date night late on could be on the cards. You can wear what you want, drink what you want and just crash out when you have had enough. No worry of getting a taxi home or bad weather to ruin an outfit. You could dress up or dress down, decorate your house or not at all. The options are endless.

A kitchen dance party

Miss dancing? Why not crank the music up and dance around your kitchen. There will be nobody watching but your close family, they will join in and it could be a great way to just have a bit of low-key fun without any worries, pressures or anxiety. Dancing is a great way to lift tension, so if you have been worried about what has been going on then this could be a great way to help you feel better. Don’t save these kitchen dances for just your birthday though, make it a regular thing.

Getting creative indoors

We are all stuck inside at the moment. To the point where we may be going a little stir crazy. So you may be feeling a little deflated that your birthday has to be spent this way. But it is a chance to get a little creative indoors. Think about the things you enjoy doing, for example, heading to the cinema. What about a movie marathon? Create a cinema in your home with popcorn and blankets, lowlights and comfort. You could also things about dressing up, a murder mystery evening, board games fun. There is so much you can do but often the hardest thing is to get creative and think of the ideas. Try searching online or putting some words into pinterest and seeing what comes up?

Camping in the garden

OK so it's winter, snowy and rainy in the UK, but as spring approaches and the weather improves  why not move your family from the house to the garden and enjoy sleeping under the stars as an alternative? This could be especially fun if you have children and a great way to help you feel like you are doing something a little different. It might not be the campsite you thought, but at least your kitchen and bathroom are close by.

What we have to look forward to

Of course, the situation that we find ourselves in right now will not last forever. We know that these things are going to get better as vaccines are rolled out and things improve. When that will be nobody truly knows, but it is always worth it to remind ourselves of the things that we have to look forward to. With that in mind, here are some of the ways that we can celebrate our birthdays when things are no longer lockdown and covid related.

Go to see your favourite artist or band

Most people love some form of music, it is one thing we share in common, however the major difference is the type of music people like. Whether you like a rock band and want to get some tickets for a specific band, for example, or you like a bit of pop and fancy watching your favourite artist live. Whatever takes your fancy, you are bound to find some tickets near or around your birthday and heading to a concert or festival can be a great way to spend your birthday. This is something that many of us will have missed this last year. Live music will certainly be embraced when things get back to normal.

Organise a social gathering at your favourite bar or restaurant

Maybe you prefer to do things a little more sociable, and a great way to do that is to reserve a table at your favourite bar or restaurant and invite your closest friends to celebrate in style. This can be a great way to catch up with friends and enjoy their company while also toasting your big day. It can also be quite cost effective if you pay in advance for drinks on the table, so it doesn’t need to be an expensive way to celebrate either. This is something I think many of us will be wanting to do the moment it is safe to meet in larger groups again.

Head away on a vacation

Remember that feeling of having the sand between your toes, experiencing a new place for the first time or the warmth of the sun on your skin? We can all be entitled to go a little wild for a birthday every once in a while, whether that is a weekend away, a week or more. Heading away on vacation is a great way to enjoy your birthday while also spending some quality time with friends, loved ones or family. It could be a place where the night scene is off the charts, or somewhere a little more relaxing with places to see and things to do. Of course, it is entirely up to you. Now more than ever travel is something that many of us will never take for granted again.

Visit a theme park

If you just want to celebrate the day then heading to a theme park is a great way to enjoy it. Especially if you are a thrill seeker and love the rollercoaster rides on offer. It can also be a great fun day to capture with friends, as most of the rides have a photograph option capturing some of the most funny facial expressions at the fastest point of the rides. Theme parks are definitely one of those things we might never have thought we would miss but have done.

Enjoy a relaxing spa day

Finally, if relaxation is what you are after then men can enjoy a spa day just as much as women can. Many spas offer male packages with treatments and techniques designed for male skin types. Everyone loves a chance to feel pampered at some point and a spa day can be a great way to enjoy your special day.

Let’s hope that this has inspired you to celebrate your birthday a little differently in lockdown and when the time comes and things are back to normal.
